Since Stig Larsson and his Millenium Trilogy I have taken an interest in the other Scandinavian crime writers.
Karin Fossum is the Norvegian Patricia Cornwell and her characters come vividly alive against dark hues of the underbelly of Norvegian small town community. All of that is taken care by Inspector Sejer and his handsome young colleague Skarre. This lady can write!
Jo Nesbø is another Norvegian writer, but quite a different style. His anti hero type of antisocial and introvert detective is called Harry Hole. Again his descriptions about the back drop to dark arctic seasons envelope the fight against alcoholism and self loathing that make Harry Hole "my life is not so bad after all" comparison for the reader. But of course he is the man and solves the ickiest murders and crimes in his world and survives to tell the tale. Well, so far...
Then there are the West of Finland Roslund & Hellstrom who get the best twist in the tale and most satisfactory ending price for their book Three Seconds. After a excruciatingly slow start the story line sprirals towards brilliant but by no means easy conclusion. Excellent and must find more books by these dudes!
