In bed with bad boys

Quiet weekend and I have been enjoying luxurious lie in's both mornings. It has been cold outside so I have been spending most of my time under the covers watching telly and enjoying some bad boys.

For example I had taped Thin Lizzy: Bad Reputation from BBC4 series Legends and throughly enjoyed it. Thin Lizzy is most definetly on the soundtrack of my life, although I was never a huge fan. Good stuff!

The second series of Sons of Anarchy started on Five USA last week so I taped the first episode and watched it yesterday. It is a good drama, but I have to be exrtra vigilant with the remote control as the violence gets me gagging and heaving in no time. Predictably I fancy the total headcase with piercing blue eyes called Tig, who is played by totally gorgeous Kim Coates. Phaaaawrrrr!

Well, today I have been back 5 years in London town and I can't believe how quickly the time has gone. Tomorrow is Monday but it is the last day of January and I have put couple of cans of beer to chill in the fridge ready for Tuesday dinner time. Allons-y!

Finally Friday!

This week has gone quite quick but has been also strangely hard work. After four weeks of dropless January I am so ready for a drink or two. Alas, January continues until Monday so any dreams of a tipple or two will have to wait. Have a good weekend ;)

Counting my blessings - again

The past decade or so has brought us what is called car crash TV and C4’s My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding most definitely fits that category. A previous documentary last year and now the series have left me absolutely flabbergasted and always at the end got me wanting to break something big made of glass over my head. It is hard to believe we live in UK and that the year is 2011 when watching this programme. *shaking my head*

My friends and I have often had conversations regarding how lucky we were to have been born at the particular time we did, to which country and especially to which culture. My mum and I have never had a close or warm relationship, but the one thing she drummed to my head from early on is that girls can do what ever they want and make their own way in this seemingly mad world of men.

This is why it is so incredible for me to see these young traveller girls spouting their insane sounding drivel about their age old traditions. There are rules of how they have to behave, how they have to stay pure, even how the somewhat violent courting happens, how they are brought up to be home makers and ultimately baby makers. Only thing they are allowed to do is dress very daringly which is total double standards in my book, but I am glad they got at least something to call freedom. Education is frowned upon and they don't see any need for it in their lives.

Most religious groups have the same kind of rules, the Muslims, the orthodox Jews, various Christian sects including the Amish. But out of all the mentioned religious groups the Amish actually give their kids a choice to go and see how the others live, something called rumspringa which means literally "running around", and then give them the decision of to stay with the flock or join the rest of the "English" world. But should you choose the rest of the world, you will be shunned. At least get to choose your life but you must give up either your independence or your family. How fundamentally sad is that?

I will not commit/or by this age I have gotten rid of any kind of undesirable commitment to religion, a man, a "friend" or any other kind of partnership for that matter. It is just me myself and I, and as long as I don’t kill or break any other laws knowingly and I continue to pay my taxes, I alone will take responsibility for my actions. There, sanctimonius rant over.

Hip hip hurray for the freedom to be able to be different and I can actually honestly say; Life is good :)

Sexism

Andy Gray and Richard Keys from Sky Sports slagged off a woman referee and Karen Brady for a good measure. Sounds like a start of a joke? It is a bit, as these dinosaurs are probably still living in the 1949. They were forced to make an apology and had to sit out from last nights Bolton - Chelsea game.

Well, at the end of the day they are only men...not a lot can be expected of them except understanding the rules of the football.

And there is the tit for your tat!

Ed Force One

I just spent couple of hours watching Iron Maiden: Flight 666 full length rocumentary film that I taped from BBC4 last night and I am seriously buzzing as my brain is flooded with serotonin because of the excellent music.

It was nice to see Bruce Dickinson fly a plane, Adrian Smith play tennis, Nicko McBrain looking like a London cabbie on a golf course, Steve Harris signing autographs with a little help from his kids, Dave Murray managing to look dignified through out and Janick Gers just being enigmatic Janick Gers. Their crew was funny and the air hostesses on the plane were naturally wearing Iron Maiden shirts.

They flew 36,000 and something miles around the world in couple of months playing in far flung places where they had never been before. The fans were up for it (to put it mildly!) everywhere where they went and the gigs looked quite amazing. Good stuff!

Liquid chocolate - simply genius!

During the dropless January my favourite tipple has been Options Belgian Chocolate Mint Madness hot drink. And allegedly only 38 calories per cup it has been a real winter warmer and after dinner treat. I might keep it up even after I bring the alcohol back into my diet ;)

"It was Heavy, man..."

I finished reading Mick Wall's book Appetite For Destruction yesterday. The book is a compilation of his articles in Kerrang mainly through 80's big hair-metal era and his own observations of life in the press corp of heavy metal and rock.

The writing is honest and the interviews are good, if not a tad too testosterone fueled, but then again the whole music business IS mainly a testosterone fueled cliche. He manages to describe the grit and the alleged glamour of the backstage life, which is certainly gritty but not so glam.

It is a good book and it actually made me giggle in places, but mainly it manages to reinforce my conviction that most of the rock musicians (in this case I am talking about few American ones) are a heavily narcissistic bunch of ego has landed types.

But thank goodness there are musicians who make music, otherwise there would be no ear candy to promote the serotonin production in my brain ;)

Reality - or is it?

Last night BBC2 managed to expand my mind a bit further with Horizon What Is Reality? and quite frankly my blonde head got totally jammed with all kinds of information and speculation.

There was stuff about structure of time and space, quantum mechanics and quantum reality. Also mentioned was the theory of hologram blasted from event horizon at the edge of a black hole, and there is a Hogan's Holometer that might be able to measure this. But the important thing is to find Higgs boson particle so that we can explain mass.

Did I comprehend what was said...? I really can't be sure of it, but this was most excellent TV and thank you BBC2 for broadcasting it.

Maybe I am not even writing this...? Or maybe I did it already in the other dimension...? Maybe I am an eminent theoretical physicist in another reality...? Yikes!!!

Get well soon Karelian blonde astronaut!

Karelian astronaut the brave Timothy Kopra has gone and had an accident on his bike on Saturday and his next trip to space is somewhat in doubt.

No doubt we Karelian's are hardy stock, but I dont think he injured himself by cycling quietly along a country lane, more like tearing down a mountain on a mountain bike I believe ;)

Get well soon Mr Kopra and lets hope you get to go up one more time :)

It'z Monday

Breakfast comedy gold

This morning I was kerfuffling in the kitchen and preparing my breakfast when the Eric & Ernie sketch came to my mind and made me laugh out loud. Pure comedy gold, enjoy!

Men and consequences

In the news this week Julian Assange has been back in court opposing his extradition to Sweden to face the alledged sexual offences. The Swedish dude Basshunter has also been in court in Scotland to deny any allegations of sexual assault.

Well, what ever happens with these famous guys above, there was an article in Lancet that it has been proved that uncircumcised men spread the bacteria that causes cancer of the cervix in women. All the ladies there know how annoying but nessecary it is to have the human pappiloma virus test periodically, and it is all in the intrest of self preservation because otherwise some male carried bacteria might end up killing you.

When I was with F-Head back in the day, he more than likely caused the "cellular changes" that were found during a routine HPV test in my cervix and I had to go through a really unpleasant experience of colposcopy some years ago. I can assure you, never again.

I have now been in self imposed celibacy for quite a few years, but I still carry condoms in my purse because as the Scout's say: Be prepared! I will not put myself at risk for anyone and for any reason.

So thank heavens for the invention of condoms so insist on using/use them people as it really is the cheapest life insurance going!

Doing my bit

In the news there has been speculation if the engineers can or cannot fix the problems of over population of this planet.

"Each year the number of people in the world is due to rise by 75million - equivalent to the entire population of the UK.

Most of the growth will be in the African continent, which is following in the industrial footsteps of Asia, and in cities."

Religion, ignorance, poverty and sadly vanity and are main culprits in my opinion. As I see it, by not having children I am doing my bit for this earth.

Mind you, as an effort it is only a mere drop in the ocean like recycling whilst heavy industry in certain countries is killing us faster than we can say global warming. One can but try and I am glad I won't be here to see the planet exploding after dying simply because we broke it. So there!

One degree

Last night I was treated to a bit of understandable physics watching Horizon What is One Degree? on BBC2. Comedian Ben Miller actually has a PhD in quantum physics and went on to search for an answer to a fundamental question of what is one degree. It was very interesting and I managed to stay awake all the way through.

It was nice to witness some actual quantum physics in action at one point when we saw experiments with superfluid helium. You can watch it here.

Good stuff!

Welcome Golden Balls!

Well, here it is! Dishy & tattooed David Beckham, the king of free kicks has signed up to train with my beloved Tottenham for a month contract. I never thought I'd see the day when he wears a Tottenham shirt even in training, but here it is anyway.

Welcome Becks but what a shame I won't get to hear what songs they would make of you (or the Mrs!) on the terraces :)

Another bout of nostalgia

Min was sorting out her old photos the other day and came across some of me during the Brighton years. I can remember these pictures being taken on the Brighton Pier like it was only couple of years ago, when in fact it must be way over a decade ago. Less wrinkles and still some puppyfat on the face - or was it puffy simply because of the alcohol abuse the night before....?

Brighton is looking good from the pier.

Tiring start

Apart from the blip of happiness with canine variety yesterday, this week has been extremely hard work and I have been physically exhausted with returning to long working hours.

The country is not doing much better. It all started on Tuesday when call me Dave's government hiked up the VAT up to humongous 20%. Well, actually I believe it is the only way to get some money back sharpish to the government money box that Labour Party managed to empty almost totally.

People in several places are drowning in waste and local councils are just useless and obstinate and they don't even try to sort it out. Never mind that the rodent population increases ten fold, but the smell must getting quite bad.

And if that does not bother you, the cretin toy talibans have been "heard" by the intelligence services planning an imminent attack. So the police presence is great here in London town and the security is beefed up at airports. Bring it on you little cowards and let's see what you got! *shaking my fist*

Well, this weekend I will do once again sweet nothing and my bed will be the place to be to recharge my almost empty batteries.

Smiling this morning

I am feeling giddy this morning because of chance encounter of a canine variety. I was coming through the ticket gates at Leicester Square station when I spotted two happy police Spaniels working away hard with their handlers.

I have seen their work featured in the ITV series Send In The Dogs so who knows if the ones I saw this morning are actually famous already.

But who ever the dogs were, this made me smile and I have not stopped since, which is nice :)

Stargazed

For the past three evenings I have been mesmerized by astronomy and science. BBC threw a three part Stargazing Live TV event on three concecutive nights and I have enjoyed it immensly. It was hosted by my fave rock star physicist prof Brian Cox and comedian Dara O'Briain, and there were few laughs along the way.

The major geeking up the science has been most interesting, but still not quite interesting enough for me to rush to buy a telescope or hang out on a field on a cold dark night waiting for a meteor shower. No doubt that it would be spectacular to see but I have to leave it to more devoted crowd.

Beautiful Andromeda galaxy, our nearest large neighbor galaxy

I do hope that we can get to Mars one day and I hope we get plenty more programmes here on Earth like this series. Good stuff!

First Monday

First Monday of this year, and because it is a Bank Holiday I got a sweet lie in this morning. Weather is a different shade of gray but it should be getting warmer but wetter by the end of the week, which is nicer than freezing cold and snow.

Well, this is the last Bank Holiday until Easter (107 days away!) so I best make the most of it by chilling out and doing not a lot. Easy does it ;)

Tillman & Friends go parade

Last time my blog friend Mr Rockhill came over to visit me briefly he told me about this new years Rose Bowl Parade float for the Natural Balance Pet Foods.

I managed to find a video on YouTube of the float where Tillman and friends jumped and skin boarded for the duration of the parade. The view of the dogs is not so good but you get the idea. But before that, meet the stars of the float (click on the pic to make it bigger).

Dropless January - Looking back at all the drinking in 2010

From midnight last night I started the trad "dropless" January, ie no alcohol for a month to give my body a well earned rest for a bit.

Cheers friends, it was a blast!
